With all of the road construction going on around Kalamazoo, many of our locally owned businesses are struggling to stay open. These businesses have been in Kalamazoo for years and have weathered a lot of ups and downs.
At the moment the bakeries are struggling to hire and keep trained staff. All of the new building construction and changes downtown, along with road closings, have greatly reduced the number of customers coming through their doors. Understandably, many of us have given up on venturing out to other areas of town to avoid frustration and the added hassle of trying to find our way around the detours. Bakeries are unique in that their products need to be produced daily to maintain quality and freshness, and baking in advance is not a feasible option for them. The closings of the MacKenzie and Boonzayer Bakeries these past few years have already left a large gap. Current bakery owners have all been supportive of each other and other local businesses during this rough period. The business owners have been quick to refer customers to other local businesses in an effort to meet customer needs and help each other through this rough period.
Recently I ran across a video on Facebook posted by Sarkozy's Bakery, trying to help locals navigate to another bakery. The Victorian Bakery that has been hit harder than some by the lane closures and complicated detours preventing access to their business.
Check out Sarkozy's recent effort to help them out:
